What can parents do to ensure that their children's feet develop correctly ? The answer is simple: buy footwear which carries the "Healthy Foot" mark. Ill-fitting, incorrectly selected footwear can cause foot deformation and many painful illnesses, which become more acute with age.
When you buy footwear, it is worth then to consider a few recommendations :

• Never buy footwear without trying it on the child's feet (no "guessing" the right size or choosing the size with a piece of stick). While trying the footwear on, the child should stand or walk so that you are able to check the length and width of the footwear.

• Footwear should be slightly longer than the foot (about 7-8 mm) for two reasons
-while you walk, your feet move to the front, so if the footwear is too short your big toe will strike in the footwear toe cap,
-child's feet grow about 5 mm in a half year (at puberty it may be even more), which means that too well-fitting footwear may turn out too short quite quickly.
• Footwear must not be too narrow, children (it refers particularly to girls) must not wear narrow-toed footwear. If you let them put on such footwear, you can be sure their feet will get deformed, and blood circulation in the feet will be incorrect.

• Do not let children wear any higher heels; this results in the deformation of the front foot part as well as in pelvis and backbone defects.

• Pay attention if the footwear is flexible. Only the footwear that is made of soft materials, with a well-bending sole will allow children to walk easily and naturally.
Parents of younger children!
• Delicate feet of those children, who are just starting to walk are particularly sensitve to incorrect footwear. Orthopaedists claim that one of the causes of flat feet is a lopsided heel. It can be prevented by wearing footwear with high, laced top and rigid heel (that does not get deformed during walk). Sandals with open heel may be selected for children (to slightly older ones, not to those that are just learning to walk) only when they have a hollow for the heel (a bed to keep the heel in place), which does not allow for the heel to slide sideways.
